ICD-10 Countdown: October 2013
Per CMS requirements, by October 1, 2013, all health care claims must be coded using the ICD-10 code set instead of the ICD-9 code set.
ICD (International Classification of Diseases) diagnosis coding is used for billing, reporting, and health care management. A change was mandated by CMS from the current ICD-9 coding to ICD-10. The current ICD-9 is not adequate for the demands of today's health care business.
You will need to use ICD-10 codes on all HIPAA transactions, including outpatient claims with dates of service and inpatient claims with dates of discharge on and after October 1, 2013. Otherwise, you will need to resubmit your claims and other transactions with the ICD-10 codes.
